The Loupe as a Way of Thinking
Ten-power magnification became more than a tool: it established a shared scale for description and comparison.

A loupe brings inclusions, joins, abrasions, hallmarks, and tool traces into view without separating the object from the hand. Its portability helped standardise close looking across workshops and trading desks.
The conventional 10× lens is useful only when held correctly: close to the eye, with the object brought into focus and light directed across or through the feature of interest.
Magnification does not eliminate interpretation. The observer must still distinguish a scratch from a polishing line, a natural from a chip, and a maker's mark from later damage.
